CBCT Scanning
What is CBCT scanning?
CBCT, or cone beam computed tomography, is an advanced imaging technology that gives us exceptionally detailed 3D views of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Compared to traditional CT scans, CBCT provides faster images with significantly less radiation exposure, making it both more efficient and patient-friendly.
Why is a CBCT scan needed?
We may recommend a CBCT scan when we need a clearer, more complete picture of your oral health. The 3D images allow us to locate issues like impacted teeth, infections, bone loss, and fractures with far greater accuracy than a standard dental X-ray. CBCT is especially important when planning surgical procedures, as it helps us determine the safest and most effective approach.
Who is a candidate for CBCT scanning?
Both kids and adults can benefit from the added detail CBCT provides, and we’ll recommend it based on your care needs. Whether preparing for implants, evaluating TMJ problems, or diagnosing unexplained discomfort, the scan helps us gather the information needed for precise treatment planning.
What can be expected during a CBCT scan?
A CBCT scan is quick, comfortable, and completely non-invasive. You'll be seated upright, and the scanner will rotate around your head, eliminating any enclosed spaces or feelings of claustrophobia associated with a traditional CT scan. You may hear a light humming sound as the images are taken.
Most scans take only a few seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on the level of detail needed. There's no discomfort or downtime afterward, so you can get back to smiling.
